Travel and study
Study abroad at one of our partner institutions around the world and enjoy a learning experience like no other.
During your time abroad, you'll take courses at our partner university and enjoy the sights, culture, history and food of the region.
Eligibility
You're eligible to study abroad if:
- You have a minimum cumulative average of B (75%) or a 3.0 GPA.
- Your account at Royal Roads is in good financial standing.
Academic credit
The academic credits you earn while abroad might count toward your Royal Roads degree.
To be sure the credits will count, you'll need to get approval from your program head before you travel.
Application deadlines:
-
Winter and Spring exchange: September 30
- Fall exchange: April 1
Get ready to study abroad
Step 1: Choose your destination
Review the list of partner universities in the table at the bottom of this page. You have options in Asia, Europe, North America, South America and Australia.
You can filter the options by country and by program of study and go to their websites to learn more.
Pick your top two choices.
If your program isn't listed, contact the study abroad team to learn about your options.
For ideas of where to go, read about the study abroad experiences of Royal Roads students and check out the BC Study Abroad Student Blog.
Step 2: Apply to study abroad
- Fill out the form to apply to be an outbound exchange student. You'll indicate your top two choices of where you want to study.
- Submit the following to the email address on the form:
Letter of understanding
Sign this letter of understanding to show you understand how the exchange will work. The letter includes information about tuition, housing, travel and documents.
Letter of motivation
Write a 500-word letter that answers the following questions:
- Why do you want to study abroad?
- How will you benefit from the experience in the short term? In the long term?
- How will you be a good ambassador for Royal Roads University?
- How will a student exchange experience help you achieve your goals?
After we've reviewed your application, we'll email you to let you know if you've been accepted to study abroad.
Step 3: Get matched with a university
In your application, you'll have submitted two choices of where you want to study.
Where you go depends on a few factors, including how many spots are available at the university you chose and how many Royal Roads students want to go to the same place.
Once you're matched with a university, we'll email you to let you know where you'll go.
Then, Royal Roads will officially nominate you to attend that institution as an exchange student.
Step 4: Apply to the partner university
Once Royal Roads has nominated you, you'll receive an email from the partner university with instructions on how to apply to attend their institution.
We'll support you through the application process.
Step 5: Meet with your program head
Before you apply make an appointment with the head of your program to discuss your studies abroad.
Gather information about the courses you're thinking of taking, including program descriptions, and bring them to the meeting.
Here are some things you'll want to discuss with the program head:
- Are the courses a good match with your program of study at Royal Roads?
- Will you get credit for the courses you're taking abroad? How many credits will you get?
- What can you do so you don't fall behind in your program? Take an online course?
You'll fill out the proposed completion plan with your program head and send it to an education abroad coordinator.
If you make any changes to your courses once they've been approved, let the Royal Roads education abroad coordinator know as soon as possible.
Step 6: Before you go
You have a few more steps to take before you board your plane:
- Visa and passport requirements
Review the visa requirements of your destination country by checking the country’s embassy website. Depending on your country of citizenship, you may have to travel to Vancouver or another city to obtain a visa.
Make sure your passport is up to date and will be valid for the duration of your time abroad. - Tuition and fees
In this exchange program, you pay tuition and fees to your home university. You'll receive an invoice and will need to pay your tuition and fees to Royal Roads before you leave on your study abroad experience. - Housing
Some of our partner institutions offer on-campus housing. Once you're accepted to the university, their staff will help you apply for on-campus housing.
If you aren't able to get a room on-campus, start researching off-campus options. The partner institution will likely be able to offer guidance on where to find a place to live. - Royal Roads forms
Submit these forms before you leave:
- release of liability agreement
- emergency contact information - Study abroad preparation
Review these two guides. They include information about passports, visas, vaccines, travel insurance and currency conversion.
- general preparation checklist
- pre-departure handbook - International SOS
Students travelling abroad through Royal Roads will have international travel assistance through International SOS. Trip planning support is also available. You'll get a card with your account information from your education abroad coordinator.
